Neotama Arcana follows the adventure of Squeaks the Pack Rat as she is summoned to aid in a mysterious wizard’s spell casting. As she picks up objects and battles floral foes in the wooded lands adjacent to the wizard’s cottage, she finds more and more clues as to what kind of spell he may be casting, as well as what’s keeping him locked up in his home and causing the local foliage to riot. By the end of the game, the full tragedy behind the wizard's grief will be uncovered, and together they must battle the monsters that have been inside the house all along.

Squeaks Design, Modeling, and Surfacing

Concept Art and Design

I was tasked with creating our main character from concept to surfacing. The person who pitched our game provided me with a quick sketch, and I did many iterations to attempt to narrow down what kind of pack rat we wanted. We moved between several designs, before we decided on a middle ground between pack rat and humanoid.

Modeling

Squeaks was modeled using Nomad Sculpt and Maya. Nomad was used to block out all the shapes and create the detailing and highpoly model, while Maya was used for retopology. As I modeled squeaks, I made sure to consult with my rigger to ensure topology was optimized for rigging and animation purposes.

Surfacing

I was solely responsible for surfacing Squeaks in Substance Painter. This went through any iterations, as we had to keep testing the textures against our very cool toned environment. In the end, I used a mixture of shader building, hand painting, and gradients to create the finalize Squeaks texture.

Tulip Enemy Modeling, Rigging, and Animation

The Tulip character was created and surfaced by our lead concept and surfacing artist. It was my responsibility to take her concept art and create a rigged model. I also did the walk and idle animations for the Tulip enemy.
